.Living without a car made “Car Free DC Day” feel like a typical day. In honor of the day I present my commute in photographs.
Heading down 18th St NW with the wind at my back and the sun in the east.
Top Left: Commuters must remember a bike lock.
Top Right: I start out a little sleepy.
Bottom Right: My ride.
Bottom Left: Here’s the main thing to watch for while biking in the city: doors. If you’re not careful a sleepy driver will clip your handle bars and it won’t feel good. The solution: drive far from the cars at all times.
This is the craziest intersection of the trip but it is not always this weird. 18th Street intersects with Connecticut Ave NW and N Street NW and a two way street converts to a 1 way and somehow people start thinking they can just walk in the middle of it all. You’re looking at this photograph correctly — the guy is simply in the exact middle of the intersection. I’m trying to follow the minivan down N Street but it’s not just cars one has to look out for … unusual pedestrian activity alert!
Here’s where it gets nice. A 5 lane, one way version of 17th Street at 8:25 AM.
At work I put my biking shoes away and get my work shoes out.
Did you observe Car Free D.C. day? What’s your trip to work like? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
You are just like Mr. Rogers! Only in a red bike helmet in stead of the sweater. what was the deal with that sweater anyway?
